Learn to skate competitions
Competitions are FUN, introductory competitive experiences for beginner skaters.
Competitions are NOT required, but we highly recommend your skater giving it a try!
There are two competition categories: Basic Skills or/and Basic Skills w/Music
Skater can choose one or both!
Basic SKILLS
BASIC SKILLS W/MUSIC
What to Expect:
Basic Skills, is a competition where the skater simply shows off their skills by a judge asking them to perform each skill.
Skaters are grouped together by skill level. Groups are small, with no more than six skaters in each group.
Groups will go out on the ice together for a “warm up”, dismissed, and then will be called individually to the judges. (Judges may ask older levels to go out all at once.)
Judges will then ask each skater to perform a skill one at a time and score how well they perform each skill. After each skater in the group has competed, scores will then be counted and announced for placement!
That simple!
What to Expect:
Basic Skills w/Music, is a competition where the skater skates to a music routine to show off the skills in their level.
Skaters are grouped together by skill level. Groups are small, with no more than six skaters in each group.
Groups will go out on the ice together for a “warm up”, dismissed, and then will be announced individually.
When your skater is announced, they will skate to their beginning spot. When the music starts, they are able to start their routine.
Skaters get judged on the correct skills performed, how well each skill is performed, and music time limit. Points can and will be deducted if rules are not followed. This is where Junior Coaches come in!
After each skater in the group performs, scores will then be counted and announced for placement!
In order to compete in any competition, a skater must acquire a Junior Coach.
The purpose of a Junior Coach is assist your skater in mastering their skills in their level,
create their competition routine, verify that your skater is following all competition rules,
and most importantly be your skaters biggest cheerleader!

Compete USA events promote a fun, introductory competitive experience for the beginner skater. Open to all beginning skaters who are current members of Learn to Skate USA and/or U.S. Figure Skating, Compete USA provides a positive opportunity to compete at the grassroots level. Competition isn’t just about winning the gold medal. It’s a chance to show off your skills, receive feedback to further improve and drive competitive spirit.
Compete USA welcomes skaters from Snowplow Sam and Basic Skills. There are no more than six competitors in each group, and all six receive an award. You may compete in just skills with no music and/or a skills routine with music. Read the Compete USA Manual to find more information on levels, events offered and requirements.
